Small Kitchen Planning
A small kitchen can function as well as a large kitchen if it is planned carefully. There are two main elements that need to be considered when designing a small kitchen. Firstly, how to maximise storage and work spaces in a small kitchen and secondly, how to make a small kitchen look more spacious. Here are some ideas:
To ensure there is enough storage space in a small kitchen, consider installing cupboards up to the ceiling to maximise storage in a small kitchen and glass cupboard doors make a small kitchen feel more open and less “boxed in”. Open shelves can also make a small kitchen look more open, especially glass open shelves, which can let light through and brighten up a small kitchen.
Sliding doors and roller doors require less space to open than swinging doors and are perfect for small and narrow kitchens. If there is a lack of counter space, consider a pull-out table in a small kitchen. It’s only there when you need it and won’t take up any extra space.
Use the empty wall space for storage. You can free up your counter space by making use of the empty space above your countertop. The easiest way is to use one of those wall rail systems. You simply put things wherever you like along the rail. For example, matching accessories such as hooks for hanging utensils, paper towel holders, cutlery holders, spick racks, dish drainers and wine glass holders can be positioned to suit your needs.
Putting your microwave oven in a wall cabinet will not only maximise your counter space but will also reduce clutters on your countertop, just make sure the microwave is mounted at a safe level for you to operate.
A sink without a drainer makes the countertop look more spacious and provides more work space. A portable draining tray can be used instead. The tray can easily be put away when not needed and can sometimes fit over the sink bowl to give extra work surface.
A freestanding range cooker may be easy to install but a built-in oven and a built-in cooktop (hob) will help a small kitchen look more spacious by creating one continuous line along countertops and kickboards. Also by integrating appliances such as dishwashers and fridges behind cabinet doors, the run of cabinet doors is not interrupted and can flow across the room thus making the kitchen look more spacious.
A kitchen on legs also creates a visually larger space by maximising the exposure of the floor. To further increase the visual illusion of a bigger space, low-heat lighting may be used underneath the base cabinets to create a floating effect of the kitchen.
Light reflective surfaces brighten up a small kitchen and make it feel more open and try not to use very large tiles on the floor and the wall in a small kitchen. Smaller tiles visually increase the size of the room. And small cupboard knobs and handles may look less obtrusive than large chunky handles.
You can also choose from a huge range of compact kitchen appliances to suit a small kitchen: Narrow dishwashers, narrow cooktops/hobs, compact ovens or ovens combined with microwave functions, etc.

Coming up with bathroom designs that makes your bathroom seem larger and more spacious is do-able.
There are a number of ways that a person can use to make their small bathroom seem larger without having to undertake a potentially expensive, time consuming, pain-in-the-rear, remodeling and construction project.
Be adventurous if you want to. Come up unique bathroom designs to please your own eye.
With your new bathroom design you may even want to treat the powder room to a more adventurous look than in the rest of your home, indulging in lavish tile work, vividly colored wall-covering, ornate mirrors, or a unique style of sinks and fixtures. Maybe decorate the room to resemble an aquarium or even a desert scene.
Make the room look larger
Choosing light soft colors can make your bathroom look bigger and more spacious. On the other hand dark and bold colors make the bathroom appear smaller and more intimate.
If you wish to use wallpaper use subtle designs and avoid large prints and busy patterns.
Light colors for the flooring will help make the room appear roomier and more open. The most popular colors for a light bathroom floor are tans, light grays, and light blues. In the same way, additional lighting helps to open up small spaces. Think about adding some light fixtures or using larger wattage bulbs if appropriate.
Adding a window or a skylight can work wonders, even making a window larger could make a huge difference.
When selecting fixtures for your new bathroom design, keep in mind they are going into a small space. Choose simple designs made from smooth surfaces, such as ceramic and marble, and opt for light, neutral tones.
Another way to make a bathroom appear larger is to replace a large vanity or countertop with a slimmer, pedestal sink. Pedestal sinks come in many different styles, colors, and materials, making it easy to match any décor. Placing a pedestal sink in the bathroom can open up the space by as much as ten percent.
In many cases greatly reducing the number of items stored the bathroom can really make a difference. Storage shelves, hampers, and decorative items take up valuable space. The bathroom will appear much larger if these items are removed. Consider putting laundry hampers in the bedrooms instead of in the bathroom.
Add mirrors to your design
Adding more mirrors to the bathroom designs can help the room to appear bigger. Placing additional mirrors in the bathroom will help to capture all of the available light and reflect it back into the room to make it brighter, and can add depth to the room, as the mirrors reflect each other and make the walls look farther away.
Replace your old toilet with a new trendy one-piece toilet that has a cleaner look and is also much more compact than your standard two-piece toilet. Any bathroom project, big or small, will benefit from careful planning. Take some time to think about these practical points before you begin.
Add fast hot water to your bathroom design!
While you are remodeling or re-decorating is a perfect time to supercharge your water heater with a hot water demand pump and appliance! At the touch of a button the hot water demand pump speeds hot water from your water heater to your bathroom fixtures without running any water down the drain
A hot water demand system is a small inexpensive pump you install under you sink. When you want hot water you simply press the button, and the hot water is pumped at up to double the normal speed to your fixture, without running any water down the drain. You save time and you save thousands of gallons of water each year.

Designing a small space is a balancing act. You want to create a home that’s striking, but as anyone who has lived in a small space can attest to, storage can be a major issue. It can be a challenge to create a visually appealing space without too much clutter, but with a little forethought your small space will shine.
When planning the space, the furniture is very important. Furniture with a lighter footprint won’t suck up as much space from the floor, so choose items with lighter frames. The space around the furniture is also important - this is referred to negative space. For maximum comfort levels you want to try to balance the negative space with the occupied area. Choose items that can be moved around more easily for maximum flexibility, including pieces with wheels. Arm chairs may have more flexibility than a full sofa, for instance.
Plan to get the most out of your furniture - find pieces that have additional functions such as daybeds, an ottoman that doubles as a storage space and a table that sidelines as a desk or can be added to a counter to create a larger dining space. With an increasing number of people choosing urban living, many of today’s designers are very conscious of space.
Other space creating ideas include loft beds and compact appliances (think under-counter fridges and washer/dryer combination units). Use hooks in the kitchen to hang pots and pans out of the way, but keep your collection minimal. Small spaces require a firm hand on the clutter accumulation. You should have a spot for everything and ensure that items make their way back into their place immediately after use. If you are a packrat, you will require a regular purging schedule in order to keep your space livable.
Shelves can be a handy storage solution and allow you to display items. However, too much stuff may make the space appear smaller and collect dust. Furniture with doors that close can hide away your treasures, dust free.
Another essential element in your design is appropriate lighting. Dark shadowy corners will make your already small space loose even more floor space, so use the lighting to create bright, airy spaces. Mirrors are a smart addition: use them to reflect light and give the illusion of more space.
Muted or light colors are often recommended for their ability to make space appear larger, but you can use darker colors in moderation. However, small spaces can be made smaller by too much contrast, so paint the adjoining walls and ceilings similar shades.
You should aim to create focal points in each room; areas that your eye will be drawn to. You can use large colorful canvases or sheets of fabric to add color and excitement to a space, but again, consider the contrast. In a small space you might choose to use a bold pattern, but work the surrounding decor around it, keeping things in complementary tones. Curtains and pillows can add a lot to a room, but don’t overdo it.
Don’t forget the details. The beauty of a smaller space is that it costs less to finish - unique carpets, tiles or even the handles on your kitchen cabinets are little touches that set your small space apart from the rest.
By keeping it simple you can create a sanctuary that combines funky and function and will have your friends wishing that they too lived in such a fashionable abode.

I’m going to make the assumption that if you’re dealing with a small kitchen, you’re in an apartment-sized dwelling and you don’t have to worry about entertaining very often - or entertaining large crowds.
It’s a challenge, but here are a few ideas that will help. If you have a rectangular space with a minimum of 7 ft in the shorter dimension, the most efficient layout is that of a “galley kitchen”.
That’s where 2 runs of cabinets face each other and there are no corner cabinets.
If your overall width is 7 feet, this will leave a 3 foot wide work space between the cabinets.
Obviously, use as much height as you can and use light colors so that the space won’t seem as small as it is. One run of wall cabinets (the one without the cook top) should have glass doors instead of solid ones. This means the stuff inside those cabinets will have to be kept pretty neat.
You could use open shelving (without any doors) as well, but then you have a lot of extra dusting to do. Use compact appliances (mini refrigerator, compact dishwasher). Since there are only 1 or 2 people living in your home, you don’t need anything bigger.
Get a drop-in cook top instead of a range; and get a microwave/convection combination - forget about a standard oven. When will you need it? Retain a decent size sink however. Small sinks create stress.
If you have a layout that allows you to have a table in the room, use a glass top. You can also find chairs that are minimal in size - many have open backs. This combination will help in making the room seem larger than it really is.
Another option is a drop leaf table that you can fold away. Mirrors, or other reflective materials, on the backsplashes will give added depth. But don’t put mirrors directly behind the cook top or you’ll be cleaning it every day. Use counter top racks for spices and large utensils so you don’t have to use valuable storage space for these items.
Use a combination of general lighting and task lighting (lighting that aims directly where you’ll be working). Under cabinet lighting will give you the task lighting you need without taking up space. Don’t overdo it (too much glare), but don’t under light either. The idea is to make the space comfortable for you.
If there is a nearby door to a closet or basement, you can attach a rack to the inside of the door, upon which you can hang pots, pans and other small utensils. This will effectively expand your kitchen beyond it’s walls when you’re not using it.
If you’re putting a new floor down, use a tile pattern (or real tiles if you wish) and lay them in a diagonal pattern. This makes the room seem larger.
Similarly, running the grain of the cabinets horizontally instead of vertically will also fool the eye into thinking the space is larger. However, this assumes you’re using custom cabinets, and you want a wood grain instead of a color. If you use a solid color, make it light - and nothing that creates glare. You’re ready. Have a great time remodeling your kitchen.

Learning how to make a small solar panel system can be very helpful in reducing your electricity bill. It will also come in handy for different outdoor activities such as camping or if you like to take regular nature trips away to remote areas. Even if you are not too much into outdoor activities, you will still find it to be useful in offsetting your electricity bill by powering up one to several household appliances.
Before you set out to make a small solar panel system, you will first have to acquire one of the many do-it-yourself renewable energy guides that are being sold online. These guides are reasonably priced and will instruct you in a step-by-step format on how you can build your own portable solar generator. Most renewable energy guides are often quite easy to follow that even a complete novice will have no trouble at all building their own solar panel system.
To make a small solar panel system there are several components that will be required, which a good do-it-yourself renewable energy guide should be able to instruct you about in full. Some of these components are solar cells, electricity inverter, electrical charge controller and a decent size battery — preferably an auto-battery to store the electricity generated. There are a few more components which will be needed, some of which you are likely to already have around your home.
The complete cost to make a small solar panel system is fairly cheap; particularly the fact that you may be able to find some of the required parts around your home. The other components can be purchased at electrical and hardware stores. Buying all the components should cost you less than $100-200, which is a bargain, when taking into consideration that commercial portable solar panel systems are being sold for hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
When you make a small solar panel system, it wonât be adequate to power your entire home since it is in fact a portable system. But it will contribute significantly in reducing your electricity bill, as you can use it to power your RV or several different electrical devices in your house such as your TV and your desktop computer. Its compactness will also make it easy to travel with when going camping or to other outdoor destinations.
Learning how to make a small solar panel system by following one of the many do-it-yourself renewable energy guide, will not only help you to cut the cost of your electricity bill, but will also be convenient to travel with and provide you with free electricity whenever you need it.

You may not think that small kitchen appliances should be given much thought when it is time to purchase a new one because they are smaller and generally inexpensive in comparison to major home appliances, which are generally larger and static in that they can not be moved all that easily such as fridge- freezers and cookers.
But small appliances are very important as they give the finishing touches to your kitchen and are things that you probably use the most. And not all small kitchen appliances are the same. With the rise in such clever technology over the last couple of decades there is a great deal of choice. There are still standard appliances available that do exactly what they say on the tin, but some small kitchen appliances have some rather clever features to make your life little bit easier- maybe even luxurious.
For example, Siemens’ Porsche Design kettle is cordless, saving you space and keeping counter tops clutter free, but it also includes a range of safety features. The kettle automatically switches off when removed from its base, automatically switches off when boiling is complete and has a safety locking lid so it can not open when pouring and scold your hands. Boiling water can be very dangerous and with most accidents occurring inside the home, the kitchen is somewhere that you do not want to be cutting corners.
But kettles are pretty regular as far as small kitchen appliances go. For real luxury, why not invest in something a bit more novel such as an ice- cream maker or a coffee machine? For real luxury De-Dietrich’s fully automatic integrated coffee machine will give you that real coffee aroma throughout your home. It has a maximum volume of 2 litres and can hold 300g of coffee beans. It has a coffee bean holder and grinder and is touch control with a cool blue light to give your kitchen a modern glow, fitting in especially well with a contemporary glossy black or stainless steel themed kitchen. But luxury does not come cheap and although this is a top of the range specification coffee machine, it will set you back by over £1100, depending on where you buy from.
So what can you get for a bit less? Well, if you look at the other end of the spectrum, you can still get a nice looking small kitchen appliance that has plenty of features. The Whirlpool built in coffee machine costs just under £400, which is a far friendlier price tag if you are a bit strapped for cash. The water tank capacity is slightly lower that De- Dietrich’s at 1.5 litres and it only takes ground coffee and pods, not beans. It is also slightly more compact and is only semi- automatic compared to De-Dietrich’s fully automatic option. This small kitchen appliance is made from stainless steel which means that it is easy to clean and looks sleek and modern and there is a good £700 shaved off of the price tag to boot.
Of course, both manufacturers offer alternative coffee machines of varying specifications and prices and you should have a look at all of them carefully before deciding on which one is right for you.
